Locust beans recipe Iru is prepared with fermented locust bean; obe ata iru is a delightful dish pack load with a sweet aroma which tastes delicious as it can be served with ofada rice, yam, and porridge dishes.

In Nigerian, locust bean goes by several names depending on the tribe and area you are coming from, the Yoruba calls it Iru, the Igbos refers to it as Ogiri opkei, the Hausas calls it Dadawa is popularly known as Dawadawa.

Iru recipe popularly known as Yoruba stew recipe is mostly cooked with palm oil and it is also called pepper stew obe ata recipe.

Iru is rich in protein, high in lipid, it also contains carbohydrate, calcium, and fat.                                

How to make Locust Bean Stew (Obe Iru Recipe)

Ingredients

  • ½ cup scotch bonnet pepper ( Atar-rodo)
  • 4 large fresh tomatoes
  • 6 bell peppers (Tatashe)
  • 2 medium-size onions
  • 1 kg of Assorted meat
  • 1 cup of palm oil
  • 1 tablespoon crayfish
  • 2 Knorr chicken cubes
  • 1 cooking spoon Iru (locust bean)
  • Salt to taste

Method of cooking Iru Stew

  1. The first step, wash and slice your onions and share into 2 equal parts, wash the tomatoes, bell peppers, and scotch bonnet pepper and blend, I prefer rough blending and set aside.
  2. Wash and clean the assorted meat, after that, place in a pot, add salt, onion, and Knorr cube then cover and cook until soft.
  3. Remove the meat from the fire and set aside, in a pot pour in the palm oil and heat don’t bleach, add the remaining onions stir fry and add blended tomatoes and pepper, fry t almost dry.
  4. Finally, add the iru, then fry to dry, thereafter, pour in the assorted boiled meat and stock stir, add seasoning cube, crayfish, and taste salt, stir and steamer for 5 minutes,

Serve and enjoy with choice food.
