Spicy fish stew recipe is a quick and easy delicious tomato based stew cooked with fried fish, and other ingredients. Growing up this recipe is a dish we’re so familiar with and we all love the taste of fish inside the stew.

In West Africa, tomato based stew are very common recipes. It’s quite similar to Nigerian chicken stew and our popular Beef stew, with its own distinct flavor that makes the taste unique and different. The best time to enjoy this fish stew is a day after, because the stew would have being properly marinated into the fish.

Basically there are different styles of cooking fish stew such as the Mediterranean fish stew recipes, Ghanaian fish recipe, Kenyan style, and Nigerian fish recipes. They all taste great and can be eaten with boiled rice, potatoes, Yams, spaghetti, plantains and the likes.

However, stew recipes are so versatile and can be prepared with different kinds of vegetables like fresh plum tomatoes, garden eggs, canned tomatoes, carrots, spinach, and lots more vegetables.

Fish soup can be cooked with fried, boiled, or grilled fish. Though boiled fish usually fall apart easily (scatters) in the stew compare to fried and grill fish. Moreover, here are other names for fish stew; Cioppino, Bourrde Zarzuela, Cacciucco, and Fish soup.

How to Cook Nigerian fish Stew Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 kg fish (fresh or frozen Titus fish)
  • ½ kg fresh tomatoes or puree canned tomatoes
  • 3-4 pcs red bell pepper (Tatashe}
  • ½ cup fresh pepper (Atarodo, Ose)
  • 2 medium-size onions
  • 1 teaspoon curry & thyme
  • Vegetable oil
  • 2 seasoning cubes
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. First and foremost, wash your tomatoes, onion, pepper and blend to smooth or slightly rough. {You can go ahead and boil to reduce the excess water; thereby giving you a thick paste before frying. on the other hand, you can fry immediately to dry} Whichever way that is convenient for you is fine.
  2. Secondly, I used fried Titus fish (Mackerel) for my fish stew because it rare scatters and looks nice. Wash the fish sprinkle salt and fry to brown.
  3. Thirdly, bring the oil to heat in the pot, stir in your slice onion and stir fry for 30 seconds.
  4. Pour in the blended tomatoes mixture into the pot and cook as you stir continuously to avoid burning. Stir fry your stew until it’s dry, add the seasoning cube, curry and thyme.
  5. After it has stewed properly add the fish with little quantity of water, and allow to keep cooking for like 10 minutes. At this point the aroma it produces is sweet, your stew is looking delicious. 
  6. Remove from heat, ready to be served.

Serve it with Rice or Potatoes, and enjoy!
