Fura Da Nono –Homemade Nigerian Millet Balls with Milk

Fura da nono is a popular milk drink among the Hausa and Fulani people in Nigeria; fura da nunu is a fermented milk mix with ground millet grains in a ball shape.

Meanwhile, nono in Hausa language means cow milk and is been sold by the Fulani women in a big round calabash separately with the millet balls called fura, when properly combined together becomes fura da nunu classic milk drink.

Moreover, growing up in the Northern part of Nigeria, we always look forward to this delicious thick and creamy milk drink every afternoon when the heat gets intense, certainly, it cools the body and makes you feel better after drinking.  

Homemade fura da nono recipe can easily be prepared using plain yogurt or kefir milk, with a simple millet ball that will be incorporated into the milk. Fura da nunu in Hausa is millet and milk in English.

How to make Fura da nono recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of millet
  • 2 tablespoons of cornflour (ground)
  • 1 teaspoon of dry ginger root
  • ½ tablespoon of alligator pepper
  • 1-liter nono (plain yogurt or kefir milk)
  • Sugar to taste
  • Ice cubes

 Method of preparation

  1. Wash and soak the millet for like 5-10 minutes before grinding, this makes it softer and easier to blend, though you can use dry grounded millet and still achieve a good result.
  2. Blend all ingredients together with a cup of water, after that, pour into a pot and cook on medium heat till the millet thickens and forms a dough.
  3. Remove from the pot as you mold into a small round ball; finally, sprinkle the corn flour over the balls as it helps keep it moist and fresh.
  4. In a bowl mash the fura (millet) and pour in the nono either plain yogurt or kefir milk (nunu) and mix very well, then add sugar to taste.

Serve your fura da nunu with ice cubes.
