Nkwobi is a popular Igbo delicacy commonly found in the Eastern region of Nigeria. Although it has gain popularity all over the country; Nkwobi is made with boiled cow feet stirred into a thick spicy palm oil sauce. It is one of the many ngwo ngwo recipes found among the Igbo’s.

Nkwobi recipe is usually served as an appetizer in local bars and restaurants with palm wine or other drinks as good accompaniment. Trust our Men they will always go for that evening leisure, where they will relax and enjoy themselves with friends or family after a hard days’ work.

However, Nkwobi is quite different from Isi-Ewu, sometimes people mistake Nkwobi which is cow foot, or cowleg while for isiewu is the goat head. So in other words, they are two different recipes.

Moreover, cow foot is also one of the Nigerian low carb friendly dishes you will always enjoy especially those on weight loss diet plain.

Homemade Nkwobi cow feet recipe is very easy to make with the right ingredient in other to maintain that flavorful aroma. Similarly, cow feet take a longer time to cook, but with a pressure cooker, the cooking time will reduce. In the same vein, a slow cooker can as well do justice to it.

How to Make Nigerian Nkwobi –Cow Feet Recipe

Ingredients List

  • 2 kg cow leg (Cow feet/ cow leg)
  • 1 teaspoon ground Ehuru seed (African Calabash nutmeg)
  • ½ palm oil
  • 1 teaspoon Potash (kaun/Akanwu)
  • 1 handful Utazi leaf
  • ½ cup Ugba (optional)
  • 4-6 pepper (scotch bonnet pepper)
  • Seasoning cube
  • Slices of onion (optional)
  • Salt to taste

Nkwobi Cooking Tips

  • Cut the cow leg in the market, the butchers can easily do that as they remove the bones; and cut the skin into a larger chunks.
  • Soak the potash in a ¼ cup of water allow it to dissolve, and sieve out the potash into a clean plate set aside ready for use.
  • Crack then remover the outer cover of the ehuru, thereafter, that ground into powder.

Instructions

  1. First of all, wash the cow feet meat, place in a pot, spice with salt and onion; add enough water and cook to tender. Remove from heat drain water and keep aside
  2. Secondly, in a clean pot pour in the liquid potash, pour in the palm oil and stir, immediately it will form a thick consistency called ncha. A bright yellow thick consistency
  3. Thirdly, add your ehuru, pepper, seasoning cube, salt, and Ugba. Stir all ingredients to properly combine.
  4. Finally, add the cooked cow feet into the thick yellow paste and stir to mix; at this point your delicious cow leg, ngwo ngwo, Nkwobi is ready heat a little to make it hot.

Serve your Nkwobi dish in a wooden mortar just like the Picture above.

Serve with Palm wine or chilled drink of your choice!
